Mixed Martial Arts: Submission Wrestling
Mixed martial arts schools in and around Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC areas, often use the term submission wrestling to encompass their grappling methods. These methods are not always linked to one specific martial art. Submission wrestling is also called submission fighting or submission grappling. Submission wrestling is a term that’s used to describe the ground fighting and clinch fighting that are part of the mixed martial arts program, as well as parts of specific martial arts training.
A very important part of mixed martial arts training in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC is training in submission wrestling. Submission wrestling techniques offer a fighter the opportunity to dominate his opponent (force him to submit) as well the techniques to escape holds put on him from his opponent. Submission fighters should spend a great deal of time training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most often used base for submission wrestlers. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focusing almost exclusively on ground grappling. A fighter proficient in BJJ will be able to maneuver himself so that he can dominate his opponent.
Learning submission holds is an important part of being a successful MMA competitor. These are moves that are essential to learn in order to finish a fight in a way that your competitor will be forced to tap out due to pain or fear of injury. Even if you don’t plan to use submission holds yourself, it’s very important to learn the techniques and understand how to defend against them. There are three main types of submission holds.
- Joint Locks
Joint locks are holds that are used to hyper rotate or hyperextend a joint. Usually, it is illegal to apply joint locks to knees, ankles or the spine. The kimura hold is a hold that hyper rotates the shoulder. A similar move is an Americana hold. An arm bar is a hold that hyper extends the elbow. A can opener is a hold that hyper extends the neck. The Twister is a similar move in that it hyper extends the neck as well.
- Compression Locks
A compression lock is a move designed to cause intense pain by pressing a muscle against a large, smooth bone. These are usually the leg bones and the wrist. A bicep slicer is a lock that puts pressure on the bicep. The leg slicer puts pressure on the thigh muscles or the calf.
- Choke Holds
Chokeholds are submission moves that apply pressure to the carotid artery in the neck, restricting the blood flow to the brain. This can cause your opponent to pass out, briefly. There are chokeholds that apply pressure to the trachea, cutting off the air supply. A Read Naked Choke is a hold that is applied from behind, causing pressure on the neck. A Guillotine is a hold that is applied from the front. The Gator Roll is a submission hold that is applied from a north-south position.
Having a good working knowledge of submission holds can make you a formidable opponent in mixed martial arts fighting. It can also simply help you become a better defensive fighter. You can set your own goals in mixed martial arts and develop your abilities accordingly.
